Our Call to Create

The opening night, and for most people the only night. It is the one session where people tell you how they came to faith, and the one where the room is most likely to contain someone who has not.

101coded contributions across the three runs.
111minutes on average, from 102 to 125.
7questions put on average; four to eight across the corpus.
37%of contributions came from women.

Run by run

What each evening was like

Cohort 1. Met in a startup hub for 125 minutes with 19 voices in the room. The standard film was shown, taking 20% of the evening. 7 questions were put. Coded depth rose from 0.92 in the introduction round to 1.65 in the discussion. The facilitator took 42% of the turns.

Cohort 2 · 2025-04-16. Met in a startup hub for 105 minutes with 19 voices in the room. A substitute film was shown, taking 15% of the evening. 7 questions were put. Coded depth rose from 1.26 in the introduction round to 2.22 in the discussion. The facilitator took 30% of the turns.

Cohort 3 · 2026-02. Met in a corporate office for 102 minutes with 21 voices in the room. The standard film was shown, taking 23% of the evening. 7 questions were put. Coded depth rose from 0.29 in the introduction round to 1.69 in the discussion. The facilitator took 14% of the turns.

Run of show and what to show

Plan for 19 to 21 people. The sequence is the one feature of the evening with a measurable effect, and it should be run whole.

Which film

What to show

Standard

Standard package: FDE promo reel, Justin and Henry Kaestner intros, the Dave Munson / Saddleback Leather profile, then J.D. Greear on the call to create.

Substitute used

Cohort 2 substituted two films, including the Pete Ochs prison-labour profile and the Praxis redemptive frame, and produced the deepest discussion in the corpus.

Either works. The substituted night scored highest, but that is one evening, and film substitution across all 24 sessions made no measurable difference to depth.

Every film screened, by run
Cohort 1 · full recording
Cohort 2 · full recording
Cohort 3 · full recording

A substitute was used in 1 of the three runs. Across all 24 sessions, substitution made no measurable difference to marker density (1.89 against 1.58, Mann–Whitney p = 0.20). What it changes is the subject matter.

What was asked

Every question put, by cohort

Choose three. No recorded session got through more than about three at any one table, so the rest are a reserve rather than a plan.

Cohort 1 · 7 questions
  1. q0Please introduce yourself: tell us about your life path and your path to God; your business and what brought you here; any fun fact about yourself.
  2. q1J.D. pinpointed the mindset that to be a Christian with an enterprise you must use awkward names and forced Christian language. What are some ways you've seen this approach displayed in your businesses, and what is necessary or unnecessary for having your faith displayed? ([FACILITATOR] added: did you share about Jesus with your employees or clients?)
  3. q2Bezalel and Oholiab as examples of excelling in God-given skills: in what ways could your work impact the world outside the church building? (Audio: 'how do you impact lives outside the church building?')
  4. q3Our role in the kingdom involves more than attending church services and paying tithes: in what ways can our work as Christian creators provide a purposeful and positive influence on our communities and local businesses? Why is it necessary for Christians to fulfil the call to create?
  5. q4You're a co-creator with God and a cultural change agent: in what ways could your work be a unique gift to the marketplace? (Audio, to [F053]: do you have culture shock, and how will you use your perspective and skills to empower Singapore?)
  6. q5Good versus perfect: in what ways do you see your business as an instrument God might use to redeem something that's broken or needs to be improved? Who are other entrepreneurs you've seen God use this way?
  7. q6Entrepreneurship should be worship — 'no more thinking you're fulfilling your role by going to church and putting money in the offering plate.' How do you relate to this; what does doing business as worship mean to you beyond going to church?
Cohort 2 · 7 questions
  1. q0Please introduce yourself and your company. Tell us about your life path and your path to God? Tell us about your business and what brought you here! What burdens are you carrying? What do you need to put aside today to be present and here to support your growth and contribute meaningfully. Any fun fact about yourself?
  2. q1[Reading the Praxis definition of the redemptive way - 'creative restoration through sacrifice to bless others, renew culture and give of ourselves', with Romans 5:8 alongside] How do you see this video story as an example of redemptive entrepreneurship? ... maybe through that video or in your business that you're running, what is redemptive entrepreneurship for you? Did you sacrifice for everyone to win? And any personal experience on that?
  3. q1b[Second part of q1, garbled] How might your entrepreneurial journey bring creative restoration to people and places [that are suffering], for [God's] goodness?
  4. q2So in Genesis, [God] gave Adam the task of naming every creature. One of the remarkable aspects of this video is [that Pete took] all the time to get to know the names and stories of the people he hired. ... do you know someone, or did you do that in your business and you really get to know your employees very deeply, trying to understand how it helped, whether it helped them, what it resulted with?
  5. q3So how do we go beyond the bottom line? Just overall, how [will] your startup, venture [or] company reflect a Christ[-]cent[red] vision rather than just a good business plan? ([FACILITATOR]'s rephrasing of the closing question posed by the film itself.)
  6. q4Would you like to share any action you are committing to take this month based on today's discussion?
  7. qDECK_UNUSEDNOT USED. The deck carried the four standard J.D. Greear 'Explore the Principles Further' questions ('You're a co-creator with God'; unique gift to the marketplace; good versus perfect / redeeming something broken; 'Entrepreneurship Should be Worship' - 'no more thinking that you're fulfilling your role in the kingdom of God by going to church and putting money in the offering plate'). None of the four was put to the room; [FACILITATOR] improvised q1-q3 around the substituted Pete Ochs film and the Praxis Redemptive Frame instead.
Cohort 3 · 7 questions
  1. introPlease introduce yourself and your company. Tell us about your business and what brought you here! Any fun fact about yourself?
  2. q1You're a co-creator with God. Our ability to fulfill our role in the kingdom involves much more than attending church services, paying our tithes, and being a nice person—we're called to use our skills in all spaces of the world, not just the church building. In what ways can our work as Christian creators provide a purposeful and positive influence on our communities and local businesses? Why is it necessary for Christians to fulfill the call to create?
  3. q2We said that as an entrepreneur, you are a co-creator with God and have a unique call to be a cultural change agent in your community. In what ways do you believe your work could be a unique gift to the marketplace? How have you seen other business leaders use their unique gifts to empower others?
  4. q3Everything God makes is good, but because he's given us the ability to create and have dominion over the earth, we have the ability to improve the good things and perfect them in the process. In what ways do you see your business as an instrument that God might use to redeem something that's broken or needs to be improved? Who are some other entrepreneurs you've seen God using in this way who serve as a model for you?
  5. q4Entrepreneurship Should be Worship. We can say, “No more thinking that you're fulfilling your role in the kingdom of God by going to church and putting money in the offering plate. It's time to take your business and your idea and steward it for the glory of God.” In what ways can you relate to this statement? What steps could you take to ensure every area of your business (partnerships, finances, goal setting, etc.) is stewarded for God's glory?
  6. q5Would you like to share any action you are committing to take this month based on today's discussion?
  7. q6What's the difference between a believer and non-believer in [handling business problems]? (table-level improvisation; speaker uncertain)

So I just called her and we just chit chat... And I just told her. I said, look, let me pray for you. Don't worry about this... Been through COVID, you'll be fine. And I said, we'll pray about this, right? And then that was Monday. And then come Thursday, 90 days pause. So I reminded [her], oh look, I [prayed] for it, that[']s work[ed], right? ... I think it really helps to know, spend time with the employees and understand their stories because every person is more than the designation... And sometimes just people, employees think of themselves as, I'm just the salary that I'm getting paid or the designation that has been given to me. So when you spend time with them personally, they kind of relate to you. So they don't say, okay, now she wants me to do this, or now she wants me to do that. When companies grow[,] ... people who have been with you for a [F022] time[,] it doesn't necessarily mean that they'll be with you the whole way... one of the businesses has been around for 22, 23 years. So people who [have been] in the [company] for 18 years... When they started, what do you think their age is today? They have a different place in life. They want different things in life. So it's not about no longer about a job... they move from where kids are young to where now they have become caretakers of parents who are getting older. Things change and we have to recognize. ... as entrepreneurs, we are in a very privileged position to not just grow a business, but to also be involved in lives, to do things that you might otherwise not have opportunity to do and that's a privilege. My name is [M026]. This is my second time here. I own a manufacturing firm, I do architectural, so I came back to Singapore about 12 years ago. So this is a very interesting topic because when I set up this company, I started to implement, I wanted to do more [Lord's work]-related into my company. I come from a big MNC kind of thing. Big MNC to me sometimes can be quite toxic. So when I had my own business, I say, okay, I've done before this [toxic thing], it's my company, right? ... And then the question here is, how do you determine between [the Lord's] work that you might introduce into the business[]... and then a business plan? I can tell you I have no solution, it's very difficult to do because to be a Christian, to implement, it's very hard. ... [088:51] I always remind myself, [the] Lord always say[s] second chance.
